This work presents a calligraphic rendering of a gatha, or verse, attributed to the Chinese Chan master Fu Daishi. The artist, Bankei Yōtaku, was a prominent Rinzai Zen master known for his direct teaching style and his focus on the Unborn. His calligraphy reflects the spontaneity and lack of artifice central to his philosophy. The characters are executed with a bold, fluid brush, demonstrating a mastery of ink control and rhythmic movement across the paper surface.
Bankei often utilised calligraphy as a means to transmit the essence of Zen practice. The brushwork here is uninhibited, showing a clear departure from the rigid formality of earlier calligraphic traditions. Each stroke carries the weight of the artist's presence, capturing a moment of meditative clarity. The ink varies in density, creating a sense of depth and texture that contrasts with the plain, neutral background.
