A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting the bustling port of Yokohama and the arrival of international trade in 1860.
This triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora captures the transformation of the Japanese coast during the Bakumatsu period. The print depicts the port of Yokohama as viewed from Kanagawa, a site of significant activity following the opening of Japan to international trade. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, employs the traditional woodblock format to document the arrival of foreign vessels and the resulting shifts in local commerce and daily life.
The composition is divided across three sheets, creating a panoramic perspective that balances the bustling foreground with the expansive bay. In the foreground, figures in traditional attire navigate a busy thoroughfare lined with shops and stalls, their movements suggesting the energy of a growing commercial hub. The middle ground reveals the harbour, where Western-style ships sit alongside smaller Japanese craft, illustrating the meeting of different maritime technologies. In the distance, the silhouette of Mount Fuji provides a stable, iconic anchor to the scene, contrasting with the rapid changes occurring at the water's edge.
Yoshitora uses a clear, linear style to define the architectural elements and the varied postures of the pedestrians. The colour palette relies on deep blues for the water and sky, punctuated by the warm tones of the lanterns and the varied patterns of the kimonos. This work functions as a visual record of a specific moment in history, capturing the curiosity and activity that defined the port cities of the era. The inclusion of cartouches and labels throughout the print provides geographical and commercial context, typical of the informative nature of late Edo-period prints. This piece offers a view into the intersection of traditional Japanese life and the encroaching influence of global trade, presented through the precise craft of the Utagawa school.
