A detailed study by Cornelis Dusart depicting a young boy with a portable peepshow and his dog, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash.
This drawing by Cornelis Dusart captures a common figure from seventeenth-century Dutch street life: the itinerant peepshow operator. The artist, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, specialised in the depiction of peasant life and the lower classes. Here, a young boy stands in an open, rural setting, holding a portable viewing box, or 'kijkkastje', which he opens to display its contents. A small dog accompanies him, adding a sense of movement and realism to the scene.
Dusart employs a technique of pen and brown ink combined with grey wash to define the forms and create atmospheric depth. The wash provides a soft, tonal quality that suggests the overcast sky and the muted light of the Dutch countryside. The boy's posture is casual, his clothing rendered with loose, expressive lines that convey the texture of his garments. The peepshow itself is a fascinating historical detail, as these devices were popular forms of entertainment, allowing viewers to look through a lens at a series of images or dioramas.
As a draughtsman, Dusart was known for his ability to imbue his subjects with a sense of character and narrative. The boy's expression and the presence of the dog suggest a fleeting moment in a daily routine. The composition is balanced, with the figure of the boy placed centrally against a wide, low horizon. This work reflects the broader interest in genre painting and drawing during the Dutch Golden Age, where artists turned their attention to the everyday activities of ordinary people. The use of wash creates a subtle play of light and shadow, which helps to ground the figure within the space. This print offers a glimpse into the social history of the period, documenting the tools and habits of those who travelled from town to town to earn a living through simple visual spectacles.
