A refined woodblock print by Shibata Zeshin, depicting a bamboo carrying pole laden with a bag and root vegetables.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his ability to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with a keen observation of everyday objects. This woodblock print displays his characteristic economy of line and focus on humble subjects. The composition features a bamboo pole used as a carrying device, from which a small bag and a bundle of root vegetables are suspended. A sprig of chrysanthemum is tied to the pole, adding a delicate touch of seasonal colour to the utilitarian arrangement.
Zeshin often drew inspiration from the natural world and the simple tools of daily life. His work is noted for its restraint, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation in favour of clarity and balance. The print captures the textures of the woven bag and the fibrous roots of the vegetables with precision. The muted palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft greens, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. By elevating a mundane scene of market goods to the status of art, Zeshin demonstrates his skill in finding beauty in the ordinary.
This piece is representative of the artist's later career, during which he produced numerous prints that circulated among a wide audience. The clean lines and open space within the frame are typical of his approach to design, which prioritised the relationship between the subject and the paper surface. The presence of his signature and seal confirms the authenticity of the design, which remains a fine example of his graphic output. Collectors of Japanese prints will appreciate the subtle interplay of form and shadow, as well as the technical proficiency required to translate such a nuanced image into the woodblock medium.
