A powerful, gestural portrait by Sedrick Huckaby, featuring a seated figure rendered in expressive, layered lines with accompanying handwritten text.
Sedrick Huckaby, born in Fort Worth, Texas, is known for his focus on the human figure and the textures of everyday life. This work, part of his 99% series, depicts a seated woman in a posture of introspection. The composition is dominated by the subject's rounded form, created through a dense accumulation of graphite-like marks and gestural lines. The artist employs a technique that balances raw, energetic sketching with a clear sense of physical weight and volume.
The figure is captured from a high angle, looking down at her own lap. Her arms are wrapped around her torso, creating a closed, protective shape. The texture of her hair is rendered with tight, repetitive loops, while the clothing and surrounding space are defined by sweeping, layered strokes. This approach gives the image a tactile quality, suggesting the movement of the artist's hand across the surface.
At the base of the print, Huckaby includes handwritten text, a recurring element in his practice that provides a narrative layer to the visual image. The inscription adds a personal dimension, grounding the portrait in a specific context and voice. The monochromatic palette relies on variations of black, grey, and white, allowing the focus to remain on the form and the emotional resonance of the subject's posture. The work avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to capture the essence of the individual through expressive mark-making. This print offers a direct engagement with the subject, presenting a moment of quiet contemplation that feels both immediate and timeless.
