A powerful lithographic portrait by Sedrick Huckaby, featuring expressive, gestural line work and a poignant handwritten inscription.
Sedrick Huckaby is a Texas-based artist known for his focus on the human figure and the domestic sphere. This work belongs to his '99%' series, a collection of portraits that document individuals within his community. The print features a portrait of a woman, rendered with a dense, energetic application of line. Huckaby uses a heavy, gestural mark-making technique to build the form of the subject, particularly in the treatment of the hair and the shadows across the face. The lines are not merely descriptive; they convey a sense of physical presence and emotional weight.
At the bottom of the composition, the artist includes a handwritten inscription: 'I'll be glad when Barry gets back... It's hard having him away for so long... I miss him...'. This text integrates the subject's personal narrative directly into the visual field. By combining the immediacy of a sketch with the permanence of a lithographic print, Huckaby bridges the gap between private observation and public art. The subject's gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet reflection or longing. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper emphasises the texture of the marks, creating a tactile quality that is characteristic of Huckaby's approach to drawing and printmaking. The work avoids idealisation, opting instead for a raw, honest portrayal of human experience. It captures a specific, intimate sentiment while maintaining a broader connection to the social realities of the community the artist depicts.
