Description
An abstract work by Zao Wou-Ki, '15-11-2001' features dynamic brushwork and subtle colour gradations, creating a sense of atmospheric depth and serene contemplation.
Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) was a Chinese-French painter celebrated for his abstract works that blend Eastern and Western artistic traditions. He studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou before moving to Paris in 1948, where he was influenced by European modernism, particularly Abstract Expressionism. His work is characterised by dynamic brushwork, subtle colour gradations, and a sense of atmospheric depth. '15-11-2001' exemplifies Zao's later style, moving away from earlier figurative elements toward pure abstraction. The painting features a horizon line dividing the canvas into two distinct areas. The lower portion is dominated by dark, muted blues and greys, suggesting a body of water or a landmass. Above, lighter tones of yellow and grey evoke a sky or atmospheric expanse. The brushstrokes are loose and gestural, creating a sense of movement and fluidity. The overall effect is one of serene contemplation, inviting the viewer to engage with the work on an emotional level.
