A detailed lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting Napoleon Bonaparte commanding artillery during the 13 Vendémiaire uprising in 1795.
This lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicts the events of 13 Vendémiaire, a significant moment in the French Revolutionary calendar. On 5 October 1795, a young Napoleon Bonaparte commanded the defence of the National Convention against royalist insurgents in Paris. Raffet, a draughtsman known for his military subjects and his fascination with the Napoleonic era, captures the tension of the street conflict with precise linework.
The composition centres on Bonaparte, mounted on horseback, directing his artillery forces. The scene is set against a backdrop of smoke, suggesting the discharge of cannons, while the cobblestone street is littered with the debris of the skirmish. Raffet employs a narrative style common in nineteenth-century book illustration, focusing on the clarity of the action rather than atmospheric abstraction. The soldiers in the foreground are rendered with attention to their uniforms and equipment, reflecting the artist's interest in military history and the technical aspects of warfare.
Raffet was a prolific illustrator, and his work often appeared in publications documenting the rise and fall of the French Empire. His ability to translate complex historical events into accessible visual narratives made him a popular chronicler of the period. This print demonstrates his skill in using the lithographic medium to create depth and texture, from the heavy smoke clouds to the individual stones of the Parisian pavement. It provides a window into how the nineteenth-century public visualised the early career of Napoleon, framing the suppression of the royalist uprising as a decisive moment in his ascent to power.
