Zao Wou-Ki, a central figure in the development of twentieth-century abstraction, created this work in 1996. The composition reflects his synthesis of traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with the methods of Western modernism. Zao moved to Paris in 1948, where he engaged with the Parisian avant-garde, yet he maintained a connection to the calligraphic traditions of his upbringing. In this piece, the artist employs a dual-layered structure. The upper portion of the canvas features dense, dark, and gestural marks that suggest atmospheric turbulence or a canopy of foliage. These forms are applied with a rhythmic energy that recalls the fluid motion of brushwork. Below this heavy, dark mass, the canvas opens into a luminous, expansive space.
