Before he gained recognition for his brushwork, Sebastiano del Piombo was a skilled musician in Venice. He was particularly known for his proficiency with the lute, an instrument he favoured because it allowed him to perform complex arrangements without needing a secondary ensemble. This early life as a performer placed him within the inner circles of Venetian society, where he moved among other artists and intellectuals before he turned his attention to painting under the guidance of Giovanni Bellini and later Giorgione.

Biography
His artistic transition involved a shift from the soft, atmospheric techniques of his Venetian roots to the more rigid, structural compositions he encountered in Rome. After moving to the Holy City in 1511 to work for the banker Agostino Chigi, he absorbed the influence of Michelangelo. This period marked a departure from his earlier style, as he began to incorporate a greater sense of mass and weight into his figures. He eventually took holy orders in 1531, receiving the office of the papal seal, which earned him the nickname Piombo.
Modern collectors value his work for the collision of two distinct regional styles. His pieces document a rare bridge between the colour-focused traditions of the north and the sculptural, form-based standards of central Italy. His portraits, in particular, remain notable for their psychological depth and their ability to capture the specific character of his subjects through precise, deliberate handling of paint.
