Jean Charles Delafosse

Jean Charles Delafosse was more than an architect; he was a categoriser of the visual world. In 1768, he published his Nouvelle Iconologie. This was a massive project that assigned specific decorative forms to abstract concepts like "Truth" or "Virginity". His designs for objects like the Medaillon met de personificatie van de Waarheid show how he translated the personification of Truth into precise, etched lines. This systematic approach helped define the early Neo-classical movement in France.

Biography

His work is defined by the goût grec. This style rejected the curves of the Rococo for something more muscular. Delafosse used heavy garlands and classical masks to create a sense of architectural weight. His designs for clocks, such as the Ontwerp voor de kast van een staand horloge, often include dolphins or stars. These engravings were intended as patterns for craftsmen. They stand alone as balanced compositions.

Modern collectors value Delafosse for his technical precision and use of symmetry. His etchings, such as Neo-classicistische vazen in een landschap, offer a structured aesthetic that fits well in minimalist or classical interiors. The monochrome nature of these etchings provides a neutral decorative element. These etchings represent a moment when French design turned toward the order of antiquity.
