Hendrik van der Straeten

Hendrik van der Straeten began his career in Haarlem before moving to London in the late seventeenth century. While many of his contemporaries spent years on single commissions, Van der Straeten was known for his speed. He reportedly completed large canvases in a single day to settle debts at local taverns. This rapid execution gives his work a sense of immediacy that was uncommon among Dutch painters of his era.

Biography

His work belongs to the Italianate tradition, a style that favoured southern European scenery over the flat terrain of the Netherlands. He often included classical ruins, mountain passes, and Mediterranean ports in his compositions. These scenes are defined by a specific quality of light that suggests a permanent golden hour. He used fine glazes to create the hazy atmosphere of the Roman countryside.

Modern collectors value these prints for their ability to transport a room to a different climate. The views of river valleys and mountain gates provide a sense of space and distance. His art provides a window into an idealised world of classical architecture and calm waters. It is a choice for those who appreciate the technical skill of the Dutch masters applied to the warmth of southern Europe.
