When Chu Teh-Chun arrived in Paris in 1955[1] he was already thirty-five years old, had survived the Chinese Civil War, and was carrying a Hangzhou art education that stretched back to 1935. What followed was one of the more remarkable careers in post-war abstraction: a synthesis of Chinese calligraphic tradition and Western lyrical painting that he refined over sixty years, eventually dying in the city he had adopted, at the age of ninety-three.

Biography
Born in Baitu, Anhui Province on 24 October 1920[1], he studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou alongside Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki under Pan Tianshou and Wu Dayu. The three later became known as the "Three Musketeers" of modernist Chinese art. After teaching at National Central University in Nanjing, he relocated to Taiwan[1] in 1949[1] before making the decisive move to Paris six years later.
The turning point came when he encountered Nicolas de Staël's abstract landscapes. Chu abandoned figurative work entirely, developing a vocabulary of bold, layered brushwork that evoked Chinese ink painting without literally quoting it. A 1956[1] portrait won a silver medal at the Paris Salon; his 1964 exhibition at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh brought wider international recognition. He became a French citizen in 1980.
In 1997[1] he became the first ethnic Chinese artist elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His market position held at the top of the Asian modernist field: by 2013 he ranked third among living Chinese artists by auction sales, and a 2021 auction realised HKD 229.5 million for "Harmonie hivernale". Works are held in over fifty museums worldwide. He died in Paris on 26 March 2014[1].
