Christo and Jeanne-Claude

1958–2020

Both born on 13 June 1935 (Christo in Gabrovo, Bulgaria; Jeanne-Claude in Casablanca, Morocco), the pair met in Paris in 1958[1] and began a collaboration that would transform coastlines, rivers, bridges, and government buildings into temporary monuments. For decades, Jeanne-Claude's equal authorship went unacknowledged; only in 1994[1] did the pair formally credit both names on all their work.

Biography

The scale of their projects was matched only by their patience. The idea of wrapping Berlin's Reichstag first arose in 1971[1]; it took 24 years of lobbying and a Bundestag vote (292 to 223 in February 1994) before the silver fabric finally went up in June 1995. Over five million people visited in two weeks. The Gates in Central Park, proposed in 1979, opened in February 2005 with 7,503 saffron-draped frames along 23 miles of pathways.

They refused grants and corporate sponsorship throughout their careers, funding every project by selling preparatory drawings and collages. The Umbrellas (1991[1]), a simultaneous installation of 1,760 yellow umbrellas in California and 1,340 blue ones in Japan, cost an estimated 26 million dollars. On 9 October of that year, one California umbrella blew over and killed a visitor; the project closed that evening.

Jeanne-Claude died in 2009[1]. Christo continued alone, completing The Floating Piers on Lake Iseo in 2016 and Big Air Package inside a German gasometer in 2013. He died on 31 May 2020[1]. His estate subsequently realised his long-planned wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, in September 2021.
