André-Pierre Arnal came to art through literature. After studying letters and art history at the University of Montpellier, he staged his first exhibition there in 1962[1], at twenty-three. Over the following decade he aligned himself with the Supports-Surfaces movement, which held, in France from roughly 1969 to 1972, that painting should account for its own physical materials: the canvas as fabric, the paint as substance, the wall as frame. It was a post-structuralist position that asked what a picture is before it can be a picture of anything.

Biography
Arnal worked within this framework without being consumed by it. His practice extended into book illustration, producing images for poetry collections by Pierre Torreilles, Frédéric Jacques Temple, and André Pieyre de Mandiargues, all published through Fata Morgana, the Montpellier press known for its demanding literary output. The pairing of image and contemporary French[1] poetry ran through his career as a consistent concern, separate from the theoretical debates around materiality.
His reputation as an exhibiting artist grew steadily. Works entered public collections in France (the Centre Pompidou and the Musée Fabre in Montpellier) and internationally, including the Albright-Knox Foundation in Buffalo. He maintained an active exhibition schedule in France and North America across six decades. He died in Montpellier on 7 July 2024[1], aged eighty-four.
