Abdullah Suriosubroto

1878–1941 · Dutch East Indies

Abdullah Suriosubroto arrived in the Netherlands to study medicine, then changed course entirely and enrolled at the Leiden Drawing Preparation School and the Amsterdam Academy of Art. That switch, made in the early 1900s, made him the first Indonesian painter of the modern era to receive formal Western academic training. He returned to the archipelago and settled initially in Bandung to paint what he had come to find: the highlands and river valleys of West Java, with their terraced fields and volcanic slopes.

Biography

His work was classified under the Mooi Indie label in 1938[1], a term coined by the Indonesian artist S. Sudjojono to describe colonial-era landscape painting that presented the Dutch East Indies as peaceful and beautiful, stripped of any social or political reality. The label was a critique, not a category Suriosubroto would have chosen. Sudjojono used it to contrast the older generation's aesthetics with a younger, more politically engaged approach. Suriosubroto nonetheless holds an early position in the history of Indonesian painting.

He came from a family with a public role: his father, Wahidin Sudirohusodo, was a figure in the early Indonesian nationalist movement, and two of his brothers, Sudjono and Basoeki Abdullah, were also painters. A 1935[1] oil depicting a mountain in the Priangan region is now held in the collection of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. He died in Yogyakarta in 1941[1].
