A detailed woodcut from Albrecht Dürer's Life of the Virgin series, capturing a biblical scene within a grand, classically inspired architectural setting.
This woodcut belongs to the Life of the Virgin series, a collection of twenty prints produced by Albrecht Dürer between 1500 and 1511. The composition depicts the biblical scene where the infant Jesus is brought to the temple in Jerusalem for purification. Dürer places the figures within a grand, classical architectural setting, utilising a sophisticated system of parallel lines and cross-hatching to define the depth of the vaulted space and the weight of the stone columns.
The foreground is occupied by the central figures, including the Virgin Mary, who kneels before an altar, and the elderly Simeon, who receives the child. Dürer fills the background with a dense crowd of onlookers, their varied expressions and postures adding a sense of human drama to the formal religious event. The artist employs his characteristic precision, evident in the rendering of the drapery folds and the textured surfaces of the temple interior.
Technically, this work demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the woodcut medium. By varying the density of his lines, he creates a range of tonal values that suggest light and shadow without the use of colour. The inclusion of his famous AD monogram on the base of the prominent left-hand column serves as both a signature and a mark of quality. This print reflects the artist's interest in Italian perspective, which he integrated with the traditional German graphic style of his time. The result is a balanced, structured image that directs the viewer's eye through the architectural frame toward the central action at the altar. It remains a primary example of the technical capabilities of early sixteenth-century printmaking.
