A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a family gathered around a revolving lantern during the seventh month festivities.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicts a domestic scene centred on a revolving lantern, a common feature of Japanese summer festivities. The work belongs to a series representing the twelve months of the year, specifically focusing on the seventh month, which coincides with the Obon festival. During this period, families gathered to honour ancestors, and the use of light, particularly through lanterns, held cultural weight.
The composition is organised across two levels of a traditional interior. On the raised tatami platform, a group of figures observes a large, cylindrical lantern. The lantern features silhouettes of figures, which appear to move as the internal mechanism rotates, a device known as a mawari-doro. Below, on the wooden floor, children and adults interact, with one child perched on an adult's shoulders to gain a better view of the spectacle. The artist employs a clear, linear style, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, using flat planes of colour to define the architecture and the patterned garments of the subjects.
Toyomasa captures the domestic atmosphere with precision. The architectural elements, such as the shoji screens and the raised flooring, provide a structured environment for the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft greens, muted reds, and neutral tones, which allows the focus to remain on the interaction between the figures and the lantern. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing during the mid-Edo period, where registration and line quality were essential for clarity. This piece offers a glimpse into the social customs of the era, documenting the quiet, communal activities that defined seasonal celebrations in Japan.
