A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting a traditional palanquin scene with elegant figures and period textile patterns.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai captures a moment of daily life in Edo-period Japan. The composition features a kago, a traditional palanquin, being transported by a bearer. Beside the vehicle, two figures interact, their postures suggesting a brief pause in their journey. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned into a prolific printmaker, was known for his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format and his depictions of fashionable urban life.
The print displays the characteristic flat perspective and clean lines associated with the Ukiyo-e school. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft pinks, and ochre to define the figures and their garments. The patterns on the clothing, particularly the checked and floral motifs, demonstrate the attention to textile detail common in the work of this period. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, their expressions calm and composed.
Above the figures, a cartouche contains calligraphy, a standard element in prints of this era that often provided context or poetic commentary on the scene. The architectural elements, such as the wooden structure to the left, provide a sense of place without overwhelming the human subjects. This work offers a glimpse into the social customs of the time, specifically the use of the kago as a primary mode of transport for those of a certain status. The print reflects the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour block was carefully aligned to create the final image. It remains a representative example of the genre scenes that defined the output of the late eighteenth-century Japanese print market.
