A detailed woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting the social customs and New Year celebrations within the Yoshiwara district of Edo.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book Seirō ehon nenjū gyōji, or Yoshiwara Picture Book of New Year’s Festivities, published in 1804. Kitagawa Utamaro, a master of the ukiyo-e genre, documents the seasonal rituals within the Yoshiwara pleasure district of Edo. The composition spans two pages, capturing the social atmosphere of the New Year period.
Figures are arranged in a dense, observational manner, reflecting the busy nature of the district. The artist employs thin, precise lines to delineate the elaborate hairstyles and patterned kimono of the courtesans, alongside the more subdued attire of their attendants and visitors. The scene includes architectural elements such as the kadomatsu, a traditional pine decoration placed at entrances during the New Year.
Utamaro is recognised for his ability to capture the specific social hierarchies and fashions of his time. In this work, the focus remains on the collective activity of the district rather than a single subject. The print functions as a visual record of urban customs, providing insight into the aesthetic and social life of the Edo period. The lack of colour is characteristic of this specific publication, which relies on the clarity of the line work to convey the texture of fabrics and the expressions of the participants. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, typical of the period's approach to book illustration, where the narrative flow takes precedence over deep perspective. This print serves as an example of the collaboration between the artist, the publisher, and the woodblock carvers who translated Utamaro's drawings into the final printed form.
