A seminal Post-Impressionist still life by Paul Cézanne, featuring a plaster cupid statue surrounded by fruit, demonstrating his unique approach to spatial geometry and colour.
Paul Cézanne painted this work during his mature period, when he resided in his studio in Aix-en-Provence. The composition features a plaster cast of a cupid, a recurring object in his studio, positioned alongside a collection of fruit and a draped cloth. The arrangement demonstrates his interest in the relationship between three-dimensional objects and the two-dimensional surface of the canvas.
Cézanne employs a complex spatial structure here. The plaster figure appears to lean, yet its orientation remains ambiguous, a characteristic feature of his later work. He uses colour to define form rather than traditional chiaroscuro. The cool, chalky tones of the plaster contrast with the warmer, saturated hues of the apples and onions. The background is composed of flattened planes, which push the objects forward and compress the depth of the scene. This approach to perspective allows the viewer to observe the objects from multiple angles simultaneously.
By including the plaster cast, Cézanne engages with the tradition of academic art while subverting its rules. The cupid is not a classical subject in the traditional sense, but a studio prop used to explore geometry and light. The painting reflects his analytical approach to visual perception, where the act of seeing is as much about the mind as it is about the eye. The brushwork is deliberate, with small, constructive strokes building the volume of the fruit and the contours of the statue. This work remains a primary example of his influence on the development of modern art, particularly in how he deconstructed the visual field into its essential components.
