Beschreibung
A 1941 Surrealist drawing by Roberto Matta, featuring fluid, anthropomorphic forms rendered in graphite and crayon.
Roberto Matta, a Chilean artist associated with the Surrealist movement, produced this work during his formative years in exile. Panama (1941) reflects his interest in the intersection of biological forms and psychological states. The composition features fluid, anthropomorphic figures that seem to emerge from a void, a hallmark of his early morphological experiments. Matta often described his work as psychological morphology, aiming to map the internal structures of the mind rather than external reality.
The drawing employs delicate, calligraphic lines to define soft, organic shapes that suggest human anatomy without adhering to strict representation. The figures appear suspended in a non-Euclidean space, a technique Matta developed to challenge traditional perspective. His use of shading creates a sense of volume, yet the forms remain ambiguous, shifting between the solid and the ethereal. The inclusion of small, star-like motifs in the upper corner provides a contrast to the larger, central figures, suggesting a cosmic or dreamlike dimension.
Matta moved to New York in 1939, where he became a bridge between European Surrealism and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement. This piece captures that period of transition, where the automatic drawing techniques of the Surrealists began to inform a more expansive, gestural approach to space. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft washes, allows the focus to remain on the tension between the figures and the empty space surrounding them. It is a study in form and suggestion, inviting the viewer to interpret the relationships between the entities depicted. The work remains a clear example of Matta's ability to render the invisible forces of the subconscious through precise, controlled mark-making.
