A classic example of Mark Rothko's Color Field painting, featuring stacked rectangles of yellow, red, and orange.
Mark Rothko produced No. 5/No. 22 in 1950, a period during which he refined his signature compositional structure. The work consists of stacked rectangular forms that occupy the vertical space of the canvas. Rothko applied thin layers of oil paint, allowing the colours to bleed into one another at the edges. This technique creates a soft, luminous quality that suggests depth without relying on traditional perspective.
The palette is dominated by warm tones: a bright yellow upper section, a central band of saturated red, and a lower section of deep orange. A subtle, linear detail cuts horizontally across the red band, providing a slight interruption to the otherwise smooth colour fields. Rothko intended for these large-scale works to envelop the viewer, encouraging a direct engagement with the physical presence of the paint and the interaction of the hues.
Unlike the gestural approach of many of his contemporaries in the New York School, Rothko focused on the emotional resonance of colour. He avoided representational imagery, preferring to explore the relationship between light, space, and human perception. The edges of the rectangles are not sharp; they appear to hover or vibrate against the background, a result of his method of layering washes of pigment. This specific piece demonstrates his mastery of balance and proportion, where the weight of each colour block is carefully calibrated to maintain the stability of the composition. The work remains an example of the artist's pursuit of pure expression through simplified geometric forms and chromatic intensity.
