A 1970 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler featuring four distinct, saturated colour forms arranged against a stark white background.
Wind Directions, created in 1970, is a lithograph that captures the essence of Helen Frankenthaler's approach to printmaking. During this period, Frankenthaler moved away from the dense, layered compositions of her earlier work, opting instead for a cleaner, more direct engagement with the paper surface. The composition relies on the interaction between large, unprimed areas of white space and discrete, saturated zones of colour.
Four distinct shapes occupy the corners of the square frame. A deep green form sits in the upper left, balanced by a warm brown shape in the upper right. A large, dominant yellow mass anchors the left side, while a sharp, triangular blue form occupies the lower right. These shapes do not overlap, nor do they bleed into one another. Instead, they function as independent entities that define the negative space between them. The edges of these forms retain a hand-drawn quality, suggesting the physical movement of the artist's hand across the stone or plate.
Frankenthaler was a central figure in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting. Her technique often involved thinning paint to a watercolour-like consistency, allowing it to soak into the fabric of the canvas or paper. In this lithograph, the application of ink mimics this soak-stain effect, creating a sense of transparency and lightness. The work avoids complex textures or narrative elements, focusing entirely on the relationship between hue, form, and the surrounding void. By stripping the composition down to these essential components, Frankenthaler invites the viewer to consider the physical presence of colour as a primary subject. The result is a balanced, rhythmic arrangement that feels both spontaneous and carefully considered, reflecting the artist's interest in the interplay of chance and control within the printmaking process.
