A 1972 interior study by Patrick Caulfield, featuring his signature flat colour fields, hard-edged lines, and a warm, geometric palette.
Braque Curtain (1972) is a representative work by the British painter Patrick Caulfield. The composition depicts a domestic interior, rendered with the artist's characteristic precision and flat application of colour. Caulfield employs a restricted palette of warm oranges, deep browns, and blacks to construct a scene that balances representation with abstraction. The title refers to the French artist Georges Braque, whose influence is felt in the structured, almost architectural arrangement of the space.
The work features a lamp placed on a dark surface, casting a glow that defines the surrounding planes. To the left, a curtain with a repeating geometric pattern provides a decorative element that contrasts with the solid, unmodulated areas of colour elsewhere in the frame. Caulfield avoids painterly brushwork, opting instead for clean, hard-edged lines that define the boundaries of each shape. This approach removes the subjective presence of the artist, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light, shadow, and form.
Caulfield often explored the relationship between high art and everyday objects. By elevating a mundane domestic setting through a rigorous, formalist lens, he invites a re-examination of the familiar. The composition is carefully balanced, with the lamp acting as a central anchor for the eye. The use of flat colour fields creates a sense of depth that is simultaneously real and artificial, a hallmark of his approach to painting during this period. The work remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise the traditions of still-life painting with the graphic sensibilities of the twentieth century.
