A 1973 Pop Art composition by Roy Lichtenstein featuring a folding chair and cactus, rendered in his signature graphic style with bold lines and Ben-Day dots.
Roy Lichtenstein produced this work in 1973, a period when he began to shift his focus from comic-book imagery toward the representation of domestic spaces. This piece belongs to his series of interiors, which explore the conventions of perspective and the depiction of everyday objects through his signature graphic language. The composition features a folding chair, a potted cactus, and a bamboo-like rod, all rendered with the flat, bold aesthetic associated with commercial printing processes.
Lichtenstein employs his characteristic Ben-Day dots to create shading and texture, a technique derived from mechanical reproduction. The use of thick black outlines and a restricted palette of primary colours flattens the pictorial space, forcing the viewer to engage with the image as a constructed object rather than a window into a real room. The cactus, silhouetted in deep black, provides a stark contrast to the surrounding geometric forms and the window frame in the background. By isolating these mundane items, the artist questions the nature of representation and the way mass media influences our perception of the domestic environment.
The work demonstrates a calculated approach to composition, where every element is balanced to maintain a sense of order. The diagonal lines of the chair and the horizontal orientation of the rod create a structured grid that anchors the scene. Despite the lack of traditional modelling, the image conveys a clear sense of depth through the overlapping of objects and the interplay of light and shadow. This print captures the essence of Lichtenstein's later career, where he moved away from the irony of his early works to engage more directly with the history of art and the formal qualities of painting. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform ordinary subjects into iconic visual statements.
