A bold, expressive still life by Albert Marquet, featuring a floral arrangement rendered with the direct brushwork and simplified forms characteristic of early Fauvism.
Albert Marquet, a contemporary and close associate of Henri Matisse, produced this still life during a period of significant experimentation in French painting. The work displays the characteristics of the Fauvist movement, which prioritised expressive colour and simplified form over traditional academic realism. Marquet applies paint with a direct, confident hand, allowing the brushwork to remain visible and active across the surface of the canvas.
The composition is anchored by a simple vase, which holds a cluster of blossoms rendered in bold, unblended tones of red and pink. The background is a flat, warm yellow, which pushes the floral arrangement forward and creates a sense of immediate presence. Marquet avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to capture the essence of the subject through the relationship between the colours and the simplified geometry of the objects. The dark, earthy tones of the table surface provide a grounding contrast to the lighter hues of the flowers and the background.
Unlike many of his peers who pursued increasingly abstract directions, Marquet maintained a connection to the observable world throughout his career. This painting demonstrates his ability to balance the decorative potential of colour with a clear, legible structure. The economy of his technique suggests a focus on the immediate visual impact of the scene. By stripping away unnecessary elements, Marquet directs the viewer to the interplay of light and pigment. This approach reflects his broader interest in the clarity of vision, a quality that remained consistent in his later work, including his well-known harbour scenes and urban views. The work is a clear example of the early twentieth-century shift toward a more subjective interpretation of reality, where the artist's personal response to the subject takes precedence over precise representation.
