A classic ink wash painting by the Yuan Dynasty monk Puming, depicting bamboo bending in the wind against a weathered rock.
This work by the Chan Buddhist monk Puming, also known as Xuechuang, captures a singular moment of movement within a natural setting. The composition focuses on a stalk of bamboo bending under the force of a gust, a subject that held specific symbolic weight in the literati tradition of the Yuan Dynasty. The artist employs ink wash techniques to suggest the flexibility of the bamboo, contrasting the supple, dark leaves against the solid, weathered rock formation at the base.
The brushwork demonstrates the calligraphic discipline associated with the period. Puming uses varying ink densities to create a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective, despite the relatively flat pictorial space. The bamboo leaves are rendered with sharp, decisive strokes, while the rock is defined by softer, layered washes that suggest texture and age. The negative space surrounding the bamboo allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the plant and the unseen wind.
As a monk-painter, Puming often utilised these subjects to explore themes of resilience and adaptability. The bamboo, which bends without breaking, serves as a visual metaphor for the ideal scholar or practitioner. The silk support has aged to a warm, muted tone, which complements the monochromatic ink palette. This print preserves the subtle gradations of the original ink, maintaining the balance between the gestural energy of the bamboo and the stillness of the stone. It is a study in controlled spontaneity, reflecting the aesthetic values of the era where technical mastery was inseparable from the artist's internal state.
