A classic Yuan Dynasty ink wash painting by Ke Jiusi, depicting bamboo stalks with calligraphic precision and expressive ink modulation.
Ke Jiusi, a prominent painter and calligrapher of the Yuan Dynasty, produced this work in 1343. The painting depicts bamboo stalks and leaves rendered in monochrome ink on silk. This subject matter held specific cultural weight for the scholar-official class of the period, as the bamboo represented resilience, flexibility, and moral integrity. The artist explicitly references the style of Wen Tong, a Northern Song master known for his mastery of ink bamboo.
The composition relies on the calligraphic quality of the brushwork. Ke Jiusi employs varying degrees of ink saturation to suggest depth and movement. The leaves are executed with sharp, decisive strokes, while the stalks demonstrate a controlled application of ink that balances structural rigidity with organic fluidity. The negative space surrounding the bamboo serves to focus the viewer on the interplay between the dark ink and the aged silk ground.
As a work of the literati tradition, the painting functions as an expression of the artist's internal state rather than a literal representation of nature. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions adds a textual layer to the visual experience, integrating the art of writing with the art of painting. This synthesis is characteristic of the Yuan period, where the brush was used to convey the personality and scholarly attainment of the creator. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision and philosophical depth associated with the ink wash tradition in China.
