Eizan founded the Kikukawa school and consciously resisted the popular Utagawa style. He preferred the older aesthetic of Utamaro, though he developed a unique method of using heavy contours and clear colour washes. His subjects often appear softer and more naive than those of his rivals. He was among the first artists to produce kakemono-e, which are large prints designed to look like traditional hanging scrolls. His series on the poetess Ono no Komachi shows his skill in combining classical themes with modern Edo fashion.

Modern collectors appreciate the calm and balanced nature of Eizan's compositions. His vertical pillar prints are particularly suited to narrow wall spaces in contemporary homes. These works provide a detailed look at nineteenth-century Japanese life, from musical performances to festivals. By avoiding the exaggerated expressions found in actor prints, Eizan created images that remain easy to live with today.
