A woodblock print by Kikukawa Eizan depicting a domestic scene from the series Fashionable Children as the Six Immortal Poets.
Kikukawa Eizan was a prominent designer of ukiyo-e prints during the early nineteenth century. This work belongs to the series Fashionable Children as the Six Immortal Poets, a common practice in Edo-period art where historical or literary figures were reimagined through contemporary subjects. Here, the poet Kisen Hoshi is represented by a child, while an adult figure assists with grooming, a domestic scene that contrasts with the elevated status of the original poet.
The composition features a distinct cartouche at the top, which depicts a view of Seta Bridge. This inset serves as a visual anchor, providing a sense of place that complements the primary figures below. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour, typical of the bijin-ga style for which Eizan is known. The figures are rendered with soft, flowing lines, and their garments display a variety of patterns that demonstrate the technical capabilities of the woodblock printing process.
Eizan often focused on the depiction of women and children in everyday settings. His work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo, who sought prints that combined literary references with fashionable subjects. The muted palette, dominated by earthy browns, soft greens, and subtle pinks, creates a calm atmosphere. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate multiple visual layers, from the detailed textile patterns of the kimonos to the simplified, graphic representation of the bridge in the background. This piece provides a clear example of the thematic playfulness found in late Edo-period print culture, where classical poetry was frequently adapted for popular consumption.
