A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kikukawa Eizan, featuring a woman in a patterned kimono surrounded by morning glories.
This woodblock print by Kikukawa Eizan depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, positioned amidst a cluster of morning glories. Eizan was a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition during the early nineteenth century, known for his focus on the female form and the fashion of the Edo period. The subject wears a kimono featuring a bold, chequered pattern, which contrasts with the dark, patterned obi tied at her waist. Her hair is styled in an elaborate coiffure, adorned with hairpins that indicate her status and refinement.
The composition balances the figure with the botanical elements. The morning glories, rendered with delicate lines, climb a trellis that frames the woman. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the blue of the flowers and the geometric pattern of the garment to provide visual interest. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left quadrant is a standard convention in Ukiyo-e, often providing context or poetic commentary related to the season or the mood of the scene.
Eizan’s work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo. His prints often circulated as fashion plates, documenting the changing styles of the era. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. The paper retains a subtle texture, typical of the period's printing practices. The figure's posture, slightly turned away from the viewer, suggests a moment of quiet observation. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural life of Japan, where the appreciation of seasonal flora and personal adornment were central themes in popular art.
