A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kikugawa Eizan depicting two women in a quiet moment of grooming, from the series The Twelve Hours of the Green Houses.
This woodblock print by Kikugawa Eizan belongs to the genre of bijin-ga, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Eizan was a prolific artist during the late Edo period, known for his graceful figures and his contribution to the development of the bijin-ga style following the influence of Utamaro. This specific work is part of a series titled Seiro Juniji, or The Twelve Hours of the Green Houses, which documents the daily routines of women within the pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara.
The composition features two figures engaged in a private moment of grooming. One woman stands, adjusting her hair, while draped in a patterned kimono that reveals a glimpse of her form. The second figure sits on the floor, holding a small tray with a bowl, likely containing water or cosmetic preparations. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the contours of the figures and the folds of their garments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted pinks, which allows the focus to remain on the interaction between the two subjects.
Eizan uses a flat compositional approach, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where depth is suggested through the overlapping of figures and objects rather than linear perspective. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left corner provides context for the series, identifying the specific time of day associated with the scene. The print captures a quiet, domestic atmosphere, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values and social customs of the period. The attention to textile patterns on the kimonos demonstrates the artist's interest in fashion and design, which were central themes in the popular culture of the time. This print remains a representative example of the technical skill and thematic focus found in early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
