An architectural design for two commemorative obelisks created for the 1795 Alliantiefeest in Amsterdam, rendered in a precise Neoclassical style.
This architectural print depicts the design for two commemorative obelisks erected for the Alliantiefeest (Alliance Festival) held in the Plantage district of Amsterdam on 19 June 1795. The festival celebrated the alliance between the Batavian Republic and the French Republic following the Batavian Revolution. The drawing provides a precise elevation of the structures, which were intended as temporary monuments for the public celebration.
The obelisks are rendered with a faux-marble finish, reflecting the Neoclassical taste for classical forms adapted for civic display. Each pedestal features a central panel containing a small, detailed scene, likely depicting allegorical or historical subjects related to the political climate of the time. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, typical of late eighteenth-century architectural planning. The inclusion of a scale bar at the bottom indicates the technical nature of the document, which served as a guide for the construction of these ephemeral structures.
This work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Batavian period in the Netherlands, where public festivals were used to communicate political ideals through temporary architecture. The clean lines and restrained colour palette of the print allow the viewer to appreciate the structural design and the decorative intent behind the monuments. It is a document of both architectural history and the political shifts that defined the late eighteenth century in Amsterdam. The print captures the intersection of civic pride and the aesthetic conventions of the era, offering a clear view of how such temporary installations were conceived and presented to the public.
