A detailed 1795 architectural drawing of a temporary monument built for the Alliance Festival in Amsterdam, featuring a ship model and Neoclassical motifs.
This detailed watercolour and ink drawing depicts a temporary monument constructed for the Alliance Festival held on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam on 19 June 1795. The festival celebrated the alliance between the Batavian Republic and the French Republic following the collapse of the Dutch Republic. The design reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic prevalent in late eighteenth-century Europe, characterised by symmetry, order, and classical iconography.
The central structure features a large ship model resting upon a substantial pedestal. The pedestal itself contains a framed relief panel showing allegorical figures, likely representing the union of the two nations. Flanking the central base are two smaller, ornate columns topped with decorative trophies and medallions. These elements incorporate symbols of commerce, navigation, and civic virtue, which were common themes in Dutch political art of the period. The inclusion of the Dutch tricolour flag and specific maritime motifs reinforces the connection between the nation's identity and its historical reliance on trade and the sea.
The drawing is executed with precision, using fine lines and a restrained colour palette to convey the architectural form of the monument.
