A detailed architectural study of a temporary triumphal arch designed for the 1795 Alliantiefeest in Amsterdam, capturing the political spirit of the era.
This architectural study depicts a temporary triumphal arch constructed for the Alliantiefeest (Alliance Festival) held on the Dam in Amsterdam on 19 June 1795. The festival celebrated the alliance between the Batavian Republic and the French Republic following the collapse of the Dutch Republic and the flight of William V, Prince of Orange. The drawing serves as a record of the ephemeral structures erected to mark this political shift.
The design follows a rigid, symmetrical Neoclassical structure. A central archway provides a framed view of the Royal Palace on the Dam, which is visible through the opening. The facade is divided into panels featuring allegorical scenes and symbols of the new political order. These include depictions of columns, ships, and fortress-like structures, all rendered with precise ink lines and muted watercolour washes. The use of garlands, statues atop the cornice, and flanking obelisks reflects the period's preference for classical motifs to convey civic virtue and revolutionary ideals.
