A preparatory red chalk study by Avanzino Nucci depicting the martyrdom of Saint Paul, featuring expressive figures and clear compositional structure.
This drawing by Avanzino Nucci depicts the martyrdom of Saint Paul. The composition centres on the kneeling figure of the saint, who awaits the executioner standing to his right. The executioner is poised with a sword, creating a sense of immediate tension. To the left, a soldier stands in a contrapposto stance, observing the scene, while two horsemen occupy the background, adding depth and narrative context to the event. The work is executed in red chalk, a medium favoured by artists of the period for its ability to capture soft modelling and expressive line work.
Nucci, an artist active in Rome during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, demonstrates a clear command of anatomical form and drapery. The visible grid lines across the surface suggest this drawing functioned as a preparatory study for a larger painting or fresco. Such grids were common practice, allowing the artist to transfer the composition onto a larger scale with accuracy. The figures exhibit the characteristic grace and balanced proportions associated with the transition from late Mannerism to the early Baroque style in Rome. The focus remains on the dramatic narrative, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer through the sequence of the martyrdom. The use of red chalk provides a warm, unified tone, while the varying pressure of the chalk creates shadows that define the volume of the figures and the folds of their garments. This study offers a glimpse into the methodical approach of an artist working within the ecclesiastical traditions of the era, where clarity of subject and emotional resonance were primary objectives for religious art.
