A detailed study in red chalk and wash depicting the biblical Presentation in the Temple, executed by Flemish artist Jan Joost van Cossiau after Louis de Boulogne.
This work is a fine example of the practice of copying and interpreting established compositions during the late Baroque period. Jan Joost van Cossiau, a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in the early eighteenth century, produced this study after a composition by the French artist Louis de Boulogne. The scene depicts the biblical Presentation in the Temple, a subject frequently explored in European art to demonstrate mastery of complex multi-figure arrangements and architectural perspective.
Van Cossiau employs a monochromatic palette of red chalk and wash, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow across the figures and the surrounding temple environment. The composition is anchored by the central figure of Simeon holding the infant Jesus, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and various attendants. The artist pays particular attention to the heavy, twisted columns that frame the scene, a common architectural motif in Baroque religious art intended to convey a sense of grandeur and historical weight. The drapery of the figures is rendered with fluid, expressive lines, capturing the movement and emotional gravity of the moment.
As a draughtsman, van Cossiau demonstrates a clear understanding of the theatricality inherent in the original French composition. The use of light directs the viewer's eye toward the central interaction, while the surrounding figures provide a sense of depth and narrative context. This print captures the delicate tonal variations of the original drawing, preserving the texture of the chalk and the transparency of the wash. It provides a window into the methods of artists who studied the works of their contemporaries to refine their own technical skills and compositional understanding. The work remains a study in the transmission of artistic ideas across borders during the eighteenth century.
