A dynamic Baroque drawing by Raymond Lafage depicting the dramatic biblical moment of Saint Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus.
This drawing by Raymond Lafage depicts the dramatic biblical narrative of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the terrestrial realm, where the fallen figure of Saul lies in the foreground, and the celestial realm, where divine figures occupy the upper portion of the page. Lafage employs a light, calligraphic pen technique to define the figures and the surrounding environment, using hatching to suggest volume and shadow without obscuring the clarity of the line.
In the lower register, the artist captures the immediate aftermath of the divine intervention. A horse, startled by the sudden apparition, rears back, while soldiers react with confusion and alarm. The central figure of Saul is splayed on the ground, his posture conveying the physical impact of his spiritual encounter. The upper portion of the drawing is filled with a swirling arrangement of angels and clouds, which provides a sense of vertical movement and divine presence. The artist uses wash sparingly to add depth to the clouds and the figures, allowing the paper tone to function as a mid-tone throughout the work.
Lafage was known for his ability to manage complex, multi-figure compositions within a relatively small scale. His work often reflects the influence of Italian Baroque masters, particularly in the dynamic poses and the theatrical arrangement of the scene. The drawing demonstrates his skill in narrative clarity, ensuring that the viewer can follow the sequence of events from the heavenly vision down to the earthly reaction. This piece serves as an example of the draftsmanship common in the late seventeenth century, where the focus remained on the fluidity of the line and the expressive potential of the human form in motion.
