Frans Hals painted this portrait of Paulus van Beresteyn in 1629. The subject, a member of a prominent Haarlem family, is depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of the family coat of arms in the upper right, a common feature in Dutch portraiture of the period.
