Painted in 1634, this full-length portrait depicts Oopjen Coppit, a member of a wealthy Amsterdam merchant family. Rembrandt van Rijn captures the subject in a formal standing pose, dressed in the height of seventeenth-century Dutch fashion. The composition is dominated by the heavy, black silk gown, which features subtle variations in texture and sheen. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the stark white of the lace collar and cuffs to draw the eye toward the sitter's face and hands.
Rembrandt demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, to model the figure against a dark, atmospheric background. The light source, positioned to the left, illuminates the delicate lace work and the pearls adorning her neck and wrists. Oopjen holds a black ostrich-feather fan, a common accessory for women of her social standing at the time. Her expression is composed, reflecting the formal nature of wedding portraiture during the Dutch Golden Age.
This work was created as part of a pair, intended to be displayed alongside the portrait of her husband, Marten Soolmans. The two paintings were commissioned to celebrate their marriage and demonstrate the couple's status within the elite circles of Amsterdam. The technical precision in the rendering of the fabric, particularly the complex lace patterns, reveals the artist's ability to balance realistic detail with a sense of psychological presence.
