Beskrivning

A classic example of Mark Rothko's mid-century colour field painting, featuring an expansive red surface with subtle, atmospheric tonal shifts.

Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia, moved to the United States in 1913. He became a central figure in the New York School of painters during the mid-twentieth century. His work shifted from early figurative subjects toward the large-scale, non-representational compositions for which he is recognised today.

No. 21, painted in 1951, exemplifies the artist's mature approach to colour and form. The canvas is dominated by a singular, expansive field of red, which functions as the primary vehicle for the viewer's engagement. Rothko applied thin layers of pigment, allowing the paint to bleed into the weave of the canvas. This technique creates a sense of atmospheric depth, where the edges of the colour fields appear to dissolve or vibrate against one another.

In this specific work, the red field is interrupted by subtle, darker forms at the lower edge. These shapes, rendered in muted blue and grey tones, provide a visual anchor to the composition. Rothko intended for his paintings to be viewed at close range, encouraging a direct, physical encounter with the surface. By removing traditional representational elements, he sought to communicate basic human emotions, such as tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. The scale of the work is designed to envelop the viewer, creating an environment where the colour itself becomes the subject matter. The interplay between the dominant red and the cooler, lower tones demonstrates his precise control over chromatic relationships. This piece remains a clear example of his method of layering paint to achieve a luminous, soft-edged quality that avoids the hard lines of geometric abstraction.

Artist Biography

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Latvia in 1903, remains one of the most significant figures in abstract expressionism. While many associate him with colour field painting, Rothko resisted such categorisation, insisting his works were about profound human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. He sought to create paintings that resonated with viewers on a deeply personal, almost spiritual level, often drawing inspiration from mythology and philosophy.

Rothko's artistic journey evolved from early figurative works to his signature style of large, luminous rectangles of colour. These weren't mere exercises in aesthetics; Rothko intended them to be immersive experiences. He meticulously controlled the lighting and viewing conditions of his exhibitions, wanting viewers to be enveloped by the canvases and to contemplate their own existence. Famously, Rothko was commissioned to create murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, but he ultimately withdrew from the project, feeling it was inappropriate for such a setting.

Tragically, Mark Rothko's life ended in suicide in 1970, but his legacy endures. His paintings continue to captivate and challenge audiences, prompting introspection and emotional responses. Rothko's works, such as "Orange, Red, Yellow", are not just paintings; they are invitations to contemplate the human condition. His art remains a powerful testament to the expressive potential of abstract form.
