No. 16 - Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz in Latvia, moved to the United States in 1913. He became a central figure in the New York School of painters during the mid-twentieth century. This work, dating from 1960, belongs to his mature period, characterised by the reduction of form to stacked, rectangular fields of colour.

In this composition, Rothko employs a stark contrast between a dominant, saturated red and a central, expansive white void. The edges of these colour fields are not hard or geometric. Instead, they possess a soft, feathered quality, achieved through the application of thin, layered washes of oil paint. This technique allows the colours to appear as if they are hovering or pulsating against the surface of the canvas.

Rothko intended for his paintings to elicit a direct emotional response from the viewer. He often requested that his works be hung low and in groups, encouraging an immersive experience. By removing representational imagery, he sought to communicate basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. The scale of the work is intended to overwhelm the peripheral vision, drawing the viewer into the space created by the interaction of the hues.

This specific piece demonstrates his mastery of light and space. The white area acts as a source of luminosity, pushing against the surrounding red frame. The brushwork remains visible, providing a tactile quality that prevents the surface from appearing entirely flat. It is a study in balance and tension, where the simplicity of the arrangement belies the complexity of the colour relationships.
