A pair of studies by Mori Sosen, capturing the natural behaviour of Japanese macaques through delicate ink washes and observational precision.
Mori Sosen is widely recognised for his specialised focus on the depiction of monkeys. This diptych demonstrates his ability to observe animal behaviour and translate it into a refined visual language. Working within the Maruyama-Shijo tradition, Sosen moved away from the rigid, stylised conventions of earlier periods, opting instead for a method rooted in direct observation of nature.
The composition features monkeys rendered with soft, layered ink washes that suggest the texture of fur. The artist uses a technique of blurring the edges of the animals, which creates a sense of movement and depth against the neutral, aged silk background. In one panel, a monkey hangs from a slender, arching cherry branch, while the other shows a group gathered upon a rocky outcrop. The branches are painted with calligraphic precision, providing a stark contrast to the atmospheric, almost hazy quality of the primates themselves.
Sosen spent significant time in the mountains to study the habits of Japanese macaques, and this dedication is evident in the naturalistic posture and expressions of the subjects. The palette is restrained, relying on sepia tones and subtle washes to maintain a focus on form and gesture. By avoiding excessive detail, Sosen allows the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the animals and their environment. These works reflect the broader interest in natural history and zoological accuracy that gained traction in Japan during the Edo period. The prints capture a quiet, observational moment, presenting the creatures not as symbolic figures, but as living beings within their habitat. The balance between the negative space of the silk and the carefully placed elements creates a harmonious arrangement, typical of the artist's mature style.
