Seki Shūkō, a practitioner of the Nihonga style, demonstrates a mastery of ink wash techniques in this depiction of three otters. The work utilises the natural texture of silk to suggest the fluid, shifting environment of water. By applying varying densities of ink, the artist creates a sense of depth and movement without relying on rigid outlines. The otters are rendered with soft, graduated tones, capturing their sleek forms as they navigate the currents.
The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the interaction and motion of the animals. The negative space surrounding the otters functions as the aquatic medium, allowing the viewer to perceive the water through the subtle variations in grey tones.
