A dynamic depiction of a tiger by Kishi Ganku, showcasing the artist's mastery of ink and colour on silk.
Kishi Ganku, the founder of the Kishi school of painting, gained a reputation for his depictions of tigers. During the Edo period, few Japanese artists had seen a live tiger, so they relied on imported skins and traditional Chinese paintings for reference. This resulted in a stylised, almost mythical appearance for the animal. In this work, Ganku demonstrates his technical skill through the rendering of the tiger's fur, using fine brushwork to suggest texture and volume. The animal is positioned in a dynamic, crouching posture, with its head turned and mouth agape, creating a sense of immediate tension.
The bamboo, rendered in looser, more fluid ink washes, provides a contrast to the detailed treatment of the tiger. This approach reflects the artist's training in both the Kano school and his own observations of nature. The composition is balanced, with the tiger occupying the lower portion of the frame, while the bamboo stalks extend upwards, framing the subject. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones, ochre, and ink, is characteristic of the period's aesthetic preferences for subtle, atmospheric effects.
Ganku's work often combined realism with a decorative sensibility. His ability to capture the ferocity of the tiger while maintaining a controlled, balanced composition made him a sought-after artist in Kyoto. This print captures the essence of his style, showing the interplay between the solid, muscular form of the predator and the delicate, swaying bamboo. It is a representative example of the Kishi school's approach to animal subjects, where the focus remains on the physical presence of the creature within a minimal, suggestive environment. The work invites close inspection of the brushwork, which varies from the precise, short strokes defining the fur to the broad, sweeping marks used for the foliage.
