A classical etching by Claude Lorrain from 1662, depicting the mythological encounter between Mercury and Argus within an idealised pastoral setting.
This etching by Claude Lorrain, dated 1662, depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The narrative centres on the god Mercury, who is sent by Jupiter to rescue Io, a nymph transformed into a heifer, from the watch of the giant Argus. In this composition, Mercury is shown playing his flute to lull Argus to sleep, a necessary step before he can slay the giant and free Io.
Claude Lorrain, a French artist who spent most of his career in Rome, is recognised for his mastery of the idealised pastoral scene. His work often combines classical mythology with a carefully constructed view of the Roman Campagna. In this print, the figures of Mercury and Argus are positioned in the foreground, near a classical portico. The architecture provides a structural anchor, while the eye is drawn across the rolling hills towards a distant, hazy horizon. The use of line work allows for a subtle gradation of tone, creating a sense of atmospheric depth that was a hallmark of his approach to printmaking.
The etching demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human narrative with the natural world. The trees frame the scene, creating a theatrical space that directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two figures. The cattle, including the transformed Io, are integrated into the setting, reinforcing the pastoral theme. This work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in classical antiquity and the development of the heroic, idealised view of nature. The inscription at the bottom, 'Claudio Gillee inuen. in Roma 1662', confirms the artist's role as both the inventor and the creator of the image, produced during his mature period in Italy.
