Beskrivning
A quiet suburban scene by Henri Rousseau, depicting a footbridge over the Seine with his signature flattened perspective and clear, deliberate forms.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who worked as a customs officer, produced this depiction of the Parisian suburbs during the late nineteenth century. The work captures a quiet moment along the Seine, featuring a metal footbridge that spans the water. Rousseau employs his characteristic approach to perspective, where spatial depth appears flattened and objects are rendered with a deliberate, almost childlike clarity. The composition is anchored by the bridge, which divides the scene horizontally, while the vertical lines of the trees and the mast of a small boat provide structural balance.
The colour palette remains relatively muted, relying on soft blues for the sky and water, contrasted against the earthy tones of the riverbank and the foliage. Rousseau pays attention to the specific details of the urban environment, such as the street lamps on the bridge and the small French flag fluttering from the mast. A solitary figure appears on the right bank, engaged in fishing, which adds a sense of scale and human presence to the otherwise still scene. The trees are painted with a repetitive, rhythmic quality, creating a screen-like effect that pushes the background further away.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture the fleeting effects of light through impressionistic brushwork, Rousseau focused on precise outlines and solid forms. This work reflects his unique vision of the world, where reality is filtered through a lens of simplicity and order. The absence of complex shadows or atmospheric blurring allows the viewer to focus on the arrangement of shapes and the stillness of the suburban setting. It is a representative example of his ability to transform mundane locations into scenes of quiet contemplation, maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout his career.

Footbridge at Passy - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
