An atmospheric 1877 etching by Félix Bracquemond depicting a rainy day on the River Seine in Paris, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and tone.
Félix Bracquemond, a central figure in the nineteenth-century etching revival, produced this work in 1877. The scene depicts the Pont des Saints-Pères, more commonly known as the Pont du Carrousel, spanning the River Seine in Paris. Bracquemond employs a sophisticated etching technique to capture the atmospheric conditions of a rainy day. Diagonal lines cut across the composition, creating a visual shorthand for falling rain that obscures the distant urban skyline.
The composition balances the structural geometry of the bridge with the organic, textured forms of the trees on the right bank. A small steam-powered vessel navigates the water, its smoke trailing into the grey sky, providing a sense of movement and industrial presence within the urban environment. The artist uses varied line weights to distinguish between the solid masonry of the bridge and the ephemeral quality of the weather.
Bracquemond was instrumental in the movement to elevate etching from a reproductive medium to an original art form. His technical mastery is evident in the control of tone and the precision of the cross-hatching. This print demonstrates his ability to observe the mundane aspects of Parisian life and render them with clarity. The dedication in the lower right corner indicates this specific impression was a gift to a contemporary, reflecting the social circles of the period. The work provides a window into the visual character of Paris during the late nineteenth century, focusing on the interplay of light, water, and infrastructure rather than grand historical narratives. The print remains a fine example of the period's interest in capturing the immediate, transient effects of nature within the city.
