A detailed architectural study of an allegorical monument erected in Amsterdam for the 1795 Alliance Festival, capturing the political spirit of the Batavian Republic.
This print depicts the design for an allegorical column erected on the Burgerplein in Amsterdam to celebrate the Alliance Festival on 19 June 1795. The event followed the Batavian Revolution, which saw the end of the Dutch Republic and the establishment of the Batavian Republic. The structure is a classic example of late eighteenth-century political iconography, blending revolutionary fervour with traditional Dutch symbols.
The central column is topped by a flagpole bearing the tricolour, while the main body features an oval medallion.
